Girls Shared Bedroom Update: Curtain Solution for Small Windows

The girls’ shared bedroom has four (!) windows which feels like a lot in a fairly average sized room and has caused me much indecision when it came to window treatments. When we first moved in, the windows were dark brown upvc with yellow curtains and it all felt so oppressive and heavy that I swiftly removed the curtains, replacing them with cheap blackout roller blinds. I wanted simple and streamlined and they certainly did the job.

However, as time has gone on and we’ve introduced other changes to the room like the reading nook, sandblasting the beams, adding a warm pink neutral to the walls and finally, for the biggest change, painting the upvc windows, the room still felt ‘unfinished’.

Lots of improvements and warmth added with the pinky white on the walls and ceiling but still lacking a certain something?

Despite all the windows, the room is north facing and doesn’t get a lot of light, so I didn’t want to go with roman blinds within the recess as it would block out daylight. Blinds also couldn’t be hung outside the recess due to angles above the windows and overall, I felt the room lacked a certain ‘softness’ which curtains could provide.

The ‘finished’ bedroom still feeling rather cold and lacking softness around the window.

I have shared a few blog posts on the transformation of this room as it’s changed over the years, and therefore this one won’t be an extensive description of the process, however, I wanted to share the most recent progress to get the room in it’s latest form, not to mention the lovely after pictures with our gorgeous new curtains!

I have also just discovered the fabulous Rub ‘n’ Buff product which is a metallic paint that I have been using to update hardware in the guest room and so I also gave the horrible chrome window handles an ‘antique brass’ glow up too!

I made the curtain poles from broomstick handles, as with four to buy, the costs were escalating and I need a more budget solution - more on that on the blog soon!

I went for a plain fabric, hoping they don’t overwhelm the room too much and also leaving it more flexible if the room decor were to change in the future. I’ve gone for blackout lining and we’re actually finding they provide much better coverage than the blinds as they have been hung from edge to edge within each recess, therefore blocking a lot more light.

So what do you think? Were curtains the solution to softening the room and helping it feel more finished?
