Fun garden room ideas for your outdoor space

As the housing market remains stagnant and rent and interest rates high, moving home or upsizing has never felt so unappealing (and that’s coming from someone who loves moving house!) So it’s not surprising that we are all looking for ways to maximize the space we already have. With the cost of materials and labour for extensions also high at the moment, if you’re looking for extra room in your home - it’s time to start thinking outside the box, looking towards your garden and how you can make your outdoor space work harder to meet your needs.

One of the most innovative products on the market is the Hypedome, an all year round water tight geodesic dome structure, which not only looks beautiful but is super practical too. With many design variations and accessories, the Hypedome can be used for all sorts of purposes, from an ‘outdoor’ gym to dining area, glamping pod, hot tub room or greenhouse, living area, yoga retreat or painting studio. The opportunities are endless.

Made out of solid polycarbonate, the dome shaped structures have the appearance of glass but polycarbonate is 200 times stronger whilst also being considerably lighter and cheaper to manufacture. The modern design seeks to be a celebration of nature - whether it’s by giving you a beautiful view to wake up to in the morning, or the mirrored panels literally reflecting (and therefore multiplying) the plants and greenery in which they are nestled in, helping them blend into your garden and the surroundings.

The kits arrive ready to be self-built which helps to keep costs down of course. I’ve read many reviews on Trust Pilot (such a good place to look when discovering new products) and the general consensus is that it can take quite a while to build so make sure you put aside 1-2 days to assemble it with a friend. It is not a complex build, so perfectly doable for someone with little DIY skills and the kit comes with thorough instructions, however the process is quite repetitive as you pop all the panels together to make the dome.

Here are my favourite ways to use the Hypedome:

Outdoor Lounge or Drinks Area

There is nothing better than eating al fresco but with the weather in the UK being so unpredictable, the Hypedome garden pods offer a unique and cosy spot that works all year round. Be mindful in the summer of the potential greenhouse effect as the clear domes can get very warm inside. If you are likely to be using yours throughout the summer, you may want to place it in an area of your garden that receives plenty of shade. You can also purchase shade sails which will help to keep it cooler. Or go with the Opal or Mirror dome, which offer a built-in shade and help keep the interior nicely cool.

Add in some windows, fairy lights, a rug and plants and some comfortable chairs with a low coffee table, and you’ll have a gloriously cosy evening spot to retreat to.

Garden Office

If you don’t have space for a home office but are yearning for some separation from your work - a Hypedome makes a fantastic garden office. With a minimal commute but still getting slightly away from the house, you can explore insulation options, which help keep your desired room temperature all year round while also reducing the sounds coming in and out of the dome which is useful if you have lots of calls.

Glamping Pod

My favourite version of the pod is by far the Glamping dome with all the accompanying accessories. If, like us, you host a lot of guests, then this provides a great solution for those moments when you need an extra bedroom. Not only that but it offers your guests such a fun and once in a lifetime opportunity - your guests will never want to leave! From falling asleep stargazing and waking up to the sunrise, these really are magical places to stay.

The Glamping Pod Bundle comes with wall panels in a grey or mocha (a beautiful rusty brown) which give the dome plenty of privacy and a sweeping curtain to the front with full black out can be closed at night time if you so wish. It can also become your side business if you decide to rent it on Airbnb or other platforms.

How to style your garden room

I love fresh blues and greens for outdoor spaces and had so much fun dreaming up this space for a cosy indoor/outdoor living area. As the domes are fully watertight you don’t need to be restricted to outdoor furniture or cushions, giving you a lot more freedom to get the look you want. FAQ

How long does it take to build?

Allow one day for the Hypedome Mini and Hypedome S and up to 2 days for the larger models (4 sizes available), though you may find it quicker than that. The kit comes with the required tools for assembly but you will need a step stool or small step ladder to reach the panels at the top.

What base do I need?

A Hypedome can be set up on any surface - grass, decking, concrete or stone. You can purchase different flooring options including the insulated modular base and floor coverings like carpet as add ons if you wish.

How can I regulate the temperature so it can be used all year round?

Investing in window panels and insulated wall panels or shade sails will help to keep your dome cooler in the summer. If you have electricity to your dome you can install an air conditioning unit if you’re in particularly warm climates, or a heater in the winter for colder climates. The wall panels are great insulators and being a small enclosed area, you’ll find they heat up pretty quick. You can even install a log burner!

Can it be moved or reassembled once built?

The Hypedome can be taken down, stored carefully and rebuilt if you require to do so however it is designed for all weather conditions and all year round use, so unless you’re moving house, you will probably find no need.

How long will it last?

Hypedomes come with a three year warranty but their expected lifespan if looked after well is at least 15 years.

Is it easy to clean?

You’ll generally find that hose water and a quick clean with a cloth for stubborn stains is enough, however if you’re a perfectionist you can use a power washer once or twice per year if you have one.
