The Otto House Living Room

Our living room has taken a few years to develop into what it is today. The walls were in dire condition so it’s one of the only rooms we’ve invested in skimming for, and we liked the plaster effect so much that we kept it just as bare plaster for a couple of years.
Whilst I loved the texture and colour this provides, after a while the room just felt unfinished - I think due to the fact the house overall feels unfinished, after three years of living with a ‘work in progress’, I started to crave more polished, finished spaces throughout the house. So we went as similar to the real thing as we could and painted it in Setting Plaster by Farrow and Ball, which I absolutely love.
The other big change in this room which took a while to complete was the flooring. The original wooden floorboards were laid on top of carpet (who does that?!), so they moved around a lot, causing breakages. We lifted everything up, removed the carpet, laid down insulation and tried to relay the flooring but having been refurbished a few times already, we just could not get the tongue and grooves to fit back together.
Back to square one which involved saving for new flooring - no mean feat when you have 65m2 of it - but we were finally able to lay new solid oak flooring a few months ago which has completely transformed the room.
